12 short stories from Tarzan's youth, loosely interlinked, though each stands alone as a complete tale. These stories first appeared in Blue Book Magazine from September 1916 to August 1917 under the running title The New Stories of Tarzan.

From safety points in the trees the great apes watched, screaming hatred at Sheeta and advice at Tarzan, for the progenitors of man have, naturally, many human traits. Teeka was frightened. She screamed at the bulls to hasten to Tarzan's assistance; but the bulls were otherwise engaged--principally in giving advice and making faces. Anyway, Tarzan was not a real Mangani, so why should they risk their lives in an effort to protect him?
And now Sheeta was almost upon the lithe, naked body, and--the body was not there. Quick as was the great cat, the ape-boy was quicker. He leaped to one side almost as the panther's talons were closing upon him, and as Sheeta went hurtling to the ground beyond, Tarzan was racing for the safety of the nearest tree.

As a fan of the first "Tarzan", as well as the short story form, I was really looking forward to this volume, and it didn't disappoint! Terrific collection of shorter adventures that stand well on their own, as well as work together as a loose narrative. Well worth the bandwidth!

I agree with the above reviewers, this is a book to read early on in the series. After I read the first book, I wished it had been a bit longer and included more information about Tarzan's life when he was living with the apes, and this book made up for that as it is full of individual short stories about his adventures growing up!

Due to Rachael's recommendation I read this book first of all the Tarzan series. Thanks Rachael and thanks Manybooks and Gutenburg project !
I had not read any of the Tarzan books until now and I just didn't know what I was missing! The stories are believable and earthy, not at all like some of the nonsense that passes for writing today.
I'm on to book number 1 now and plan to read the whole series if possible.
Mr. Burroughs is an awesome author! What an imagination!

Before there were mutant superheroes, there was Tarzan of the Apes. And Tarzan doesn't disappoint! Tarzan rocks!
This was the first book I read that introduced me to the Tarzan series (I didn't know that this was book six) and I LOVED IT! If anything, it added even more depth to the incredible first book - Tarzan of the Apes - which I read afterwards. It didn't spoil the order by any means.
In these tales, wonderfully written by ERB, we learn more about early adventures of Tarzan. We also learn more about the personality of Tarzan - the desires that drove him and his want for companionship. There is no mention of Jane in this book - this is all about Tarzan, his adoted family of apes, and his encounters with the local tribesmen.
ERB definitely had a gift for storytelling. The Tarzan series is great reading. I'm grateful to have discover this.
