"And you conclude it to be a rather dreadful business?"

"Yes, it is."

"How?"

"Oh, I don't know. A girl usually loves the wrong man. To be poor is always bad enough, but to be in love, too, is really very dreadful. It usually finishes us--you know."

It’s a love story on the surface, but the underlying plot tells of a man who was harboring anger against a friend who had grossly betrayed him. Circumstances develop which allows him to get revenge but that results in torturing himself even more. He cleanses himself of the hatred in the end and able to reconcile things. For me the book was mediocre, so I can’t affirm if you will like it or not, but it’s a short story so may be worth reading.
This is a story of revenge...a dark gloomy artist uses his beautiful model as a weapon against his most hated enemy...A somewhat moralistic story. Hard to believe the girl would like a guy like that.
