Against the familiar background of American town life, the author portrays a group of people strangely involved in a mystery. "Doc." Gordon, the one physician of the place, Dr. Elliot, his assistant, a beautiful woman and her altogether charming daughter are all involved in the plot. A novel of great interest.

An interesting tale -- more of a suspense story than a true mystery. A young doctor interns with the sole physician in a country community and becomes entangled in the elder doctor's unusual family and their secrets. The book started out well, became a bit tedious in the middle, but picked up steam toward the end.

This is the first Mary Wilkins Freeman I have read, and will definitely read more of her work.
A young doctor comes to stay at the home of Doc Gordon to be an intern to his country medical practice. He soon learns that the family has a secret - one that's beginning to threaten the lives of the entire household. Good story, with good characterization.
