When one of Arséne Lupin' victims is found dead in a way that implicates the wily criminal, he insists on heading the police search for the real murderer. The mystery involves finding a package of letters once written to Bismarck, locating a clock on which the number 813 has significance, as well as causing a reigning emperor to make several journeys incognito. Murders by the dozens, suicide and mild forms of torture are warp and woof of the plot.

"Look sharp, Marco! The quadruple knot!"

Before he had even time to stand on the defensive, Rudolf Kesselbach was tied up in a network of cords that cut into his flesh at the least attempt which he made to struggle. His arms were fixed behind his back, his body fastened to the chair and his legs tied together like the legs of a mummy.

"Search him, Marco."

Marco searched him. Two minutes after, he handed his chief a little flat, nickel-plated key, bearing the numbers 16 and 9.

"Capital. No morocco pocket-case?"

"No, governor."

"It is in the safe. Mr. Kesselbach, will you tell me the secret cypher that opens the lock?"

"No."

"You refuse?"

"Yes."

"Marco!"

"Yes, governor."

"It's there."

"Now put your finger to the trigger."

"Ready."

"Well, Kesselbach, old chap, do you intend to speak?"

"No."

"I'll give you ten secon

There is a lot packed into this crime / mystery novel. Plots, counter-plots, suspense, treachery, surprise twists, and even a little humor. I enjoyed it very much. Highly recommended.

Very very good. The suspense is great.
Lupin's power is great, he is awsome.
LeBlanc is one of my favourite writers.
Chroniquing the hystory of French crime/suspense/thriller literature, the French writers Boileau-Narcejac once wrote that in the period "between LeBlanc and Simenon, there is nobody".
Stick with Sherlock Holmes. This is not enjoyable and does not make the grade. There is a reason why you. havent heard of this author.
Found the book a little confussing at first, but got so engrossed with the plot could not put it down. Did not know classic books were great reads. The ending really blew me away. Never in a million years would I guess the killer.
This is an awesome thriller with so many assassinations, chases and sieges. It's like in movie. The events in the story were very fluent and dynamic which had detained me to read onward till it ended. I was dumbfounded at the end when the original criminal was revealed. A criminal of higher order intellect always brings extra suspension which you will find in this book.
You will not regret if you invest your time behind the book!
A fast paced adventure/mystery novel that details the exploits of Arsene Lupin, master burglar and gentleman.
A good read.
