news flew through the village that a squadron of men-of-war was
sailing off the island. He sprang from the shopboard, and ran down
with his comrades to the beach, to gaze upon the glorious sight.
The boy was suddenly inflamed with the ambition to be a sailor; and
springing into a boat, he rowed off to the squadron, gained the
admiral's ship, and was accepted as a volunteer. Years after, he
returned to his native village full of honours, and dined off bacon

This is one of the best inspirational book i have ever read, it is full of wisdom and instructions about life.

This is a really interesting book - it had such a profound effect on its intended audience at the time and still influences contemporary politics. For all that, it's surprisingly easy reading!

It is 9.29pm Australian time, Thursday 30th September, 2004 and I have just found this title which I have been looking for for some years. I have heard some great things about Self Help by Samuel Smiles and now I am looking forward to reading it for myself.
