ali bramwell’s book reviews

This is a fresh feeling and at times quite beautiful book. The dense psychological (therapeutic?) territory of the story results in some occasionally tiring immersions into immoderate adolescent anxiety longing guilt and resentment. However these passages are intelligently and compassionately observed and build underlying themes of second chances and redemption. Some enjoyable extrapolations about artificial intelligence and psi potential which are fun but not genre breaking; gibsonesque ghost-in-the-wires type meme recurs with a serving of mystic transformation symbolism. I enjoyed Mortal Ghost considerably more than I expected to, I read it in one sitting last night well past when I should have been asleep. Proved to be a genuinely satisfying read for a slightly jaded long time consumer of fantasy and sci-fi and I will look for other titles from this author.
