I was always a fan of Arnold Bennett, especially after I downloaded the Card as an audiobook from this site. This is another of his masterpieces and there are some situations which make you grin at Helen's calm manipulation of her uncle. Well worth a read and one wonders why it was not converted into an audiobook. One could just imagine uncle doling out his money slowly (ooops... I am not going to give away anything here!) Just read it!

I agree with Mr. Taylor, about the Prince riding off in all directions... I also remember laughing hilariously as a 10 year old, till I cried, at some of these stories. They were included in a complete works of stephen Leacock, where he had something to say about gowns clinging, and the only gown that he wore was a nightgown...Worth many hours of joyous enjoyment.

PC Wren knows what he is about calling an Indian town Bimariabad (literally Fever-land!)Wish many books had more of his works like the Beau Seires.

After reading Freckles and a girl of the limberlost, this book is Terrible.
Start with the photo. How old they look, around 18 or so. The little foulmouthed child is 10, and Mickey is 14(???). But he decides to adopt her, saying she belongs to me ever so often. Big bore.
Porter cannot prevent her xenophobia from showing, typical 1920s attitude against immigrants. She doesn't seem to like the Irish much, which is surprising because her husband was half Irish!
Also a woman, according to her can only be a wife and a mother to succeed in life. Being a part of society is not advised. Sour grapes!Same thing seen in a girl of the Limberlost.
Wonder why I wasted my time here.
What was the investigation all about. She does not know, nor do I.
Would have given it a zero, but 1 for the description of the nurse's behaviour. That was good writing.
Music of the birds is for the birds. Bore!
