Lakshmi’s book reviews

This is the most complete melodrama I have ever read
You can almost hear the audience hiss when the villain comes on stage.
The plot is completely transparent, the the characters are two dimensional puppets. But the whole thing hangs together as it's type
If you enjoy beautiful heroine is bravely casting themselves s in the face of danger and sgifty smirking villains you will enjoy this. If rali is you thong you will hate it.

Mary Cholmondeley is a very original writer. Hertheme is love, and how we grow and change. The loves of two women are followed, two very close but entirely different personalities, the men that love them, within which framework she contrasts a narrow minded man and his wife and how lack of love and perception leads only to destruction. I was fascinated throughout, and found some of the descriptive passages very moving.
A little known but brilliant writer.

Two separate books in very different styles. The first reads as a first novel written in the family for their own entertainment. It is lightly amusing. The second is a complete change of tone and expression, though dealing with some of the main characters met in the first book, the sophistication and depth in the writing is completely new.
I enjoyed it immensely, and can\'t help imagining a young Georgette Heyer, sitting at home reading it. It does not have the sparkle of her books but it reads like an influence, and perhaps in the depths of feeling observed it is more satisfying. I hope others will enjoy as much as I have.

This is the most delightful short story.Leinsters sense of humour is light and not at all mean.
If you don't enjoy this story I can't vimagine where you are coming from.

A beautiful and classic love story. The characters are nicely delineated and it conveys the feel of the period.

In this book the author seems to slip over the edge into melodrama and cliché. Whilst the lone wolf series which he also wrote I have enjoyed immensely as he manages to keep his balance so well.
Still if you haven't read the lone wolf you may enjoy this as you will not have the contrast.

Three brothers and their interwoven story in the setting of Dartmoor in the 1800's.Usually I am not very attracted by descriptions of scenery but here they are so remarkable and vivid they illuminate the whole book.
The story is one of redemption, the characters very individual and well drawn. The style and types are
typical of the time. It is not fast moving but is beautiful in many ways and the story has its twists and turns.
