Mr Chambers use and accuracy of New York Revolutionary War history and Iroquois culture is amazing. He weaves a romantic adventure filled with the above. The protagonist tells a first person tale of Sullivan's 1779 Expedition against the Iroquois who remained loyal to the British. This was a total war March before Sherman.
An unorthodox plot told from the antagonist point of view. The author releases incremental information and allows the reader to believe the antagonist is the protagonist. I agree with the description of a first rate experience from a first rate author. A mixture of mystery, humor, romance and tragedy. I could say more.
Not one of Hardy's best but still a good read. The plot has too many coincidental turns to be believable; however the two central characters are complex enough to carry the story. If you are a fan of astronomy then a plus.
This book is the fictional account of the 1898 Wilmington, NC massacre or race riot where local Black officials who were legally elected, were killed or run out of town by white surpremist. This is an extremely well written book by an outstanding author. I reread several passages because the phrasing were spot-on.
This is the second book that I have read by the author. This is an entertaining plot where the death of a prospector inspires his daughter to travel to the northwest and search for his lost gold claim. She only has a map, two photographs, and a small grubstake when she arrives in a territory of cattlemen, prospectors, the antagonist, and the hero. An easy and entertaining read.
I would have given a higher rating (western genre) except for the ending.
The Promise is made to an old Indian woman. The hero is no hero in the beginning of the story. He is a heavy drinker and gets into plenty of scoffles. He is disowned by his rich father and scorned by his fiancee. The hero makes his way to the logging country and... yes another happy ending.
Not much substance but good entertainment.
