This is a fantastic short story about an antiques collector in a peculiar post-contact world where exccentric aliens do strange deeds. Cory Doctorow has an excellent imagination, and I'm glad to have read this original material. I have to find some more of this guy and see if it's just as good...

Borland is an unusual hero-type - his body is falling apart, and he's definately a bit insane, and there is a good opposite balance with Hyde (the skinned "partner").

Really good story that starts in a late medieval rural setting with fortresses, forests and folkelore - and ends up in a planet-scale nano AI battle. It's a little longer than it needed to be, and definately needs more editing, especially on the last half. I can reccommend it - reminded me a bit of Peter Hamilton's story in "Void Trilogy" with Edeard realising his powers slowly over time, at the same time as the nature of his world are revealed at the same pace.
This is a great hard sci-fi, with some really original concepts that I haven't seen with the other authors I usually stick to in this genre.
Some of the story is quite challenging, especially in the beginning where many of the quirks of the characters or language use is not explained, but it's well worth the effort to stick with it.
This is one of the reasons I enjoy sci-fi so much, as it has the ability to introduce new concepts to us and challenge our brain cells while at the same time making us turn each page eager to continue the story and find out what happens next.
This was the first Sax Rhomer novel that I read and I was quite impressed. It has action, suspense and a good storyline that reminded me of some themes that were in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom especially regarding the Thugee clan, application of drugs and death by lava. A good read that inspired me to read more from this same author.
