It's hard to believe the author of Brave New World could write such a humorous book. It's a tough read but well worth it in my opinion. One example - the minister soliciting funds from war widows for a World War I memorial, claiming that since the husbands had died abroad, the money the widows saved on burial costs should be donated to the memorial.

A great, great adventure. The hero Gilliat sacrifices all for love in this story of ingenuity and resourcefulness in the face of terrible adversity. OK, so Hugo was not an expert on the octopus (nor was he apparently aware of the phenomenon of hypothermia), but you will be entertained every second of this wonderful book.

Tolstoy can't write anything bad apparently. This is a great book about a Russian nobleman who has lost the ideals of his youth. The nobleman finds himself as a jury member where a woman he had wronged is accused of murder. I don't wish to give it all away, but you will not be disappointed with this great book.

A very good story by John Muir, about an adventure he had in Alaska with a personality-filled dog. It's a work of fiction, but Muir's love of nature comes through in every word.

This is a great book on many levels. First of all it's a very entertaining and enjoyable read. Second, it's a window into what life was like on a U.S. farm in the 1800's in "the sticks" as well as in Scotland, where the author spent his first years. Third, the book shows the brilliant mind of John Muir through his remarkable inventions. I have to admit that I thought Muir had stretched the truth about his inventions - it seemed too difficult to believe that a boy could come up with the clocks, fire-starting machines, barometers, etc described in the book. But I found real pictures of some of them on the web.

I highly recommend this book. Some of the descriptions are a little long, but still a great book and read.
