Sophia’s book reviews

This enchanting author of children's tales proves herself an apt writer of adult novels as well in this story. It is a delightful read; a bit of a victorian-style romance; but more powerfully: a study of a period in history when the expectations of marriage were being changed by the unions between an old and new society. The marriages between British aristocracy and American heiresses proved to be a misunderstanding of societal morals and cultural expectations. This is a 'must read' for those interested in the cultural history of our joint nations.

This piece is a delicious return to childhood for the reader. Any young girl might have dreamt of the lives of her dolls, but only the whimsical pen of Burnett's could sketch a fairy tale sweet enough for a child and yet hold the interest of an adult.

The story of Emily Fox-Seton is a heart-warming manual detailing how gratitude and a willingness to be a loving person can take a woman to untold heights, even through adversity.

It was a story I enjoyed curling up to for an evening's entertainment. The lively characters have a depth that make them pop to life within the movie-screen of my mind. I believe that Lady Emily will be in my thoughts for a long time.
