There has been a real boom in the fantasy and science fiction genre as more and more female authors have stepped up to the plate and begun telling stories. This has led to an increase in the number of books where the female protagonists step into the limelight instead of being relegated to damsels in distress. What I really love is that it is always obvious when the author is a woman as it can clearly be "felt" in the story. No offense to men, but male authors just can't write female characters with the same kind of authority as women. I'm usually tired of rolling my eyes so much when reading books by male authors who spent more time describing the physique of their female characters than their actual deeds. Getting back to my point, though, one of the books I can't recommend enough is the fantasy novel by Lois McMaster Bujold, called Paladin of Souls. Now before you rush off and read the book, I would highly recommend reading the prequel first, called The Curse of Chalion. The first book is from a male perspective, but it is the second book where the story really begins to shine as it has a female lead. Even more refreshing, the woman who goes on this hero's journey is middle aged and has to deal with a lot of complicated matters that all women can relate to.

07/31/2019
