One is the book by James Baldwin called Giovanni's Room, which was published back in 1956 if I recall correctly. It is a book with a lot of hidden depth and complexity, which is also why I believe that it should appeal to a broader category of readers than simply the ones who are queer. It features homosexuality and bisexuality in such a way that you can't help but feel empathy for the characters, which I think is an amazing feat and even more impressive considering the time it was written. The protagonist of Giovanni's Room is an American man named David who finds himself in Paris. He meets Giovanni, an Italian bartender, at a gay bar and the two of them end up together. I don't know how much I can really say about this book without giving away the twists, but it is really good and tackles issues that a lot of other books would simply sweep under the rug or gloss over. For a female and altogether much more optimistic take on queer romance there is also The Price of Salt that was published in the early fifties by Claire Morgan. Finally, there is Maurice by E. M. Forster, the author of A Passage to India and A Room With a View. I know that the book only came out after his death, but it was apparently written in 1913 already!

10/21/2019
