You know, the type where it feels like the author just made up something wildly outlandish for the sake of them being "alien" and unusual to readers. It's like if I went that the aliens in my book are going to have five heads that actually look like feet and their nostrils are going to be where you expect their belly buttons to be and that they procreate by sneezing on each other and then lay eggs that has wings and can fly away if they sense any danger. I'm sure somewhere online there must be like an alien "randomizer" app where you just click a generate button and it gives you a bunch of alien characteristics for your alien.

What I prefer instead are aliens where it is clear that the author has put a lot of thought into everything from the diet and behavior of the aliens to their taxonomy and anatomy as well as morphology. The xenomorphs that you mention are a great example of a design that is utterly alien to us, but makes sense and have characteristics that would make them able to exist in our reality. I think this is what makes them even more terrifying because you can completely imagine these things showing up on our planet and causing utter havoc. What made the difference, I think, is that these Xenomorphs or "Internecivus raptus" to give them their scientific name, were created by an artist named H. R. Giger. This made all the difference in the world and would explain why this creature has had such an enduring legacy in popular culture.

For good books about aliens my recommendations would be the Xenogenesis series by Octavia Butler, starting with Dawn, The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham, The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin, and maybe even The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russel.

07/01/2019
