Considering the vast scope of the Middle-earth books and the meticulous attention to detail that Tolkien provided, I would be very surprised if this was an actual oversight on his part. Personally, I think it is a matter of stealth as sneaking something somewhere on foot might be slower and more dangerous, but it surely has a higher chance of success than using a massive aerial target that is easy to spot and take down. That's just my opinion, but for someone writing at the level that Tolkien did to just "overlook" such a major plot point doesn't ring true.

09/28/2020

L C Galeana

I disagree that it is only authors who write multi-part stories who suffer from plot holes. There has been plenty of standalone novels that feature big plot holes. One of the most notable examples that I can think of is The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin by Mark Twain. It wasn't just the author whe messed things up either, there were some changes made to later editions of the novel where entire sections where removed for some reason. This obviously impacted the story in a big way. Gone Girl is another good example of a stand alone novel that is immensely popular, but if you really examine it closely there are certain elements that just doesn't hold up. Some of things obviously makes the story a lot more thrilling, but if you are bothered by plot holes and inconsistencies it can drive you crazy.

09/14/2020
