I find it hard to believe that people of the late 18th century used so many words to express themselves. Maybe this is just JFC's writing style to conote expression and emotion without parenthetical description. Were people of that era so reticent to express their feelings as shown by the semi-dramatic scene between Mabel, Jasper and Pathfinder at the end?
