A short story about a doctor who rescues a mysterious young woman from her would be murderer and takes her to his house to recover from her stab wounds. He falls in love with her but she's not who she seems.
Nobody knows who built the now crumbling wall between the Webster and Howe properties. For years the two families have fought over whose responsibility it was to repair it and now old Ellen Webster and Martin Howe continue the feud. When Ellen's niece Lucy comes to stay with her she catches Martin's eye but there is always The Wall Between.
Cornelia Van Gorder finally makes an appearance in this story that is remarkably similar to The Circular Staircase. There is the bank failure, Jack Bailey posing as a gardener, The country house, the secret room, ect. The list goes on and on. But for all of that it is still an entertaining mystery that has enough originality to leave you guessing for a while.
There is no Cornelia Van Gorder in this story either. It's the story of Rachel Innes and her niece and nephew who take a summer house in the country where all kinds of mysterious things happen.
