"That was truly ducal," said Marie.

"But he is always like that," said Sonia.

"Oh, he's all right in that way, little as he cares about society," said Germaine. "Well, by a miracle my father got cured of his rheumatism here. Jacques fell in love with me; papa made up his mind to buy the chateau; and I demanded the hand of Jacques in marriage."

"You did? But you were only sixteen then," said Marie, with some surprise.

The author was Maurice Leblanc, Edgar Jepson was a writer who served as the translator for Leblanc's Lupin series.

Leblanc was asked by his publisher to write a story to take advantage of the Sherlock Holmes craze but instead of creating a series based on a master detective he creates a glib and aristocratic master criminal.

Mystery and tension build but humor prevails throughout as Monsieur Lupin and Chief-Inspector Guerchard try mightily to outwit each other.

I thought the ending was a bit rushed so I dropped it a star for that but don't let that discourage you, this is a good book. I definitely look forward to sharing more reading adventures with M. Lupin and M. Leblanc.
Oh, great fun this one. A rollicking tale of Arsene Lupin, gentleman burglar and his efforts to outwit the police and detectives hot on his trail - the opening is a little tedious but persevere for the slapstick humour, witty asides, and some unexpected twists, definitely a must-read, I'm on the hunt for more about Monsieur Lupin's exploits!
