This thing is an epic - not in the sense of "truly great", but it is truly long. Three novelettes could have been carved from it easily.

In any case, ignoring that it gets really wordy in points (which I skipped over), it is quite the entertaining read.
Plot bullets

A treasury hunting expedition is lost in the jungle.
A lost civilization is discovered.
It is a land with incredible people, devices and powers from ancient times.
There is a struggle, in that land, going on between good and evil.
One of the adventureers is destined to aid in that struggle.
He fights for the life of that civilization, his life, and a girl he loves.

There is a sequel 'The Snake Mother' which I cannot
find on a free site at this time.

A Merritt has a wonderful imagination. I enjoyed this book very much and recommend it to anyone who enjoys a combination of fantasy and science fiction.
