Nine
The story of an attempt to reach the 'ninth' chart. As players familiar with Elite and Oolite will doubtless know, there are only eight charts reachable by Galactic Hyperspace. Does the ninth chart exist? Can it be reached? If so, what's there? This is a slightly chilling tale of the 'Ooniverse.'

He crumpled the letter and threw it aside. It was the only other object on board the paired down freighter. He was alone.
Through the vision port he could see the four Wolf Mk2 escorts awaiting their signal. He thumbed the narrow-band comms.
'Gentlemen, all systems show green. I am ready to make the jump. Proceed directly via galactic hyperspace to Rexebe following the collapse of my exit wormhole. If all goes well, I will see you there once I have jumped back from the ninth chart!' Raan glared at the ships as they lazily turned around. 'Move it! Faster! Get away now!'
Simple words of acknowledgement followed from the escorts, and they peeled away from the freighter to give him a clear zone to jump from. Truth be told the pilots were more than glad to put some distance between themselves and the erratic professor.

This was a short story that suffered from being a short story. Set in a world of the ground braking 80's computer game Elite (and all its later iterations including Oolite), the background, technology and other social structures are at least partly familiar to all who have played these games to any extent. This made the story more accessible as there was no need to start the story with page after page of background / set up / scene setting.
The story itself is based around a specific point of the elite game; there are eight 'charts' full of stars, you travel between them; but is there a ninth?
It is very difficult to give a good review with spoilers, and i dont want to give any spoilers. The story is good it is just let down by not being long enough, the end is quite abrupt. If there had been a little more to it, i would have scored it higher.
However, this and the other stories by Drew are highly recommended to anyone who played Elite, likes space stories or just generally wants something al ittle different.
