Antti Salminen aikoi ensin mennä herastuomarin jälestä kamariin, mutta pysähtyi kuitenkin pihalle. Sanoi sitten hämmästyksestä toinnuttuaan:
-- Sattuu sitä maailmassa kaikellaista. Näinköhän herastuomari lähtee nyt paikalla pois?
Herastuomari pysähtyi kuitenkin kamariin.
Isäntä kehoitti nyt vanhempia ihmisiä jäämään Kotanurmelle heiniä pöyhöttelemään ja, jos ilma myöntää, iltapäivällä ru'oille panemaan. Hän nimitteli kahdeksan henkeä, jotka olivat iältään vanhempia ja joita ei tahdottu rasittaa kävelemisellä Takamaan niitylle saakka. Olihan sinne matkaa kolme tai neljä kilometriä.
-- Saanko minäkin jäädä Kotanurmelle? kysyi Pekka Juntunen, nuorimies, kalpeakasvoinen.
