An ok adventure / romance, centered around a scheme to prove an English lord's Jacobite political leanings for the purpose of revenge. The evil young lord Ostermore and his mother add enough interest to rescue this book. Three stars, but there are better Sabatini books on this site.

There is a lot packed into this crime / mystery novel. Plots, counter-plots, suspense, treachery, surprise twists, and even a little humor. I enjoyed it very much. Highly recommended.

As a fan of the genre, this book was an extremely disappointing read for me. It sets a new low-water mark for how bad a book can be. Slow, tedious, and ridiculous.

About midway through the book, I was fully wrapped up in the plot - a very intriguing "missing person" mystery. From there things go downhill and ultimately collapse into a nonsensical ending. If I could rate this book in two halves, I would give 5 stars and 1 star.

A young man intervenes to protect an eccentric elderly gentleman during a public disruption. He soon finds himself employed by the old man's family as both bodyguard and investigator in a blackmail case. A decent mystery yarn intertwined with an extremely heavy romantic interest.

I really enjoyed it - great plot, plenty of suspense. Unfortunately some of the characters and their dialog are dry as chalk dust, so 4 stars instead of 5.

Dry, boring characters. Uneventful, repetitious plot. Eventually I gave it up. The only reason I stayed with it as long as I did is because I have enjoyed other Hume novels very much.
