Greg B.’s book reviews

This is a very good book. It is somewhat outdated in some respects, but it has great useful info if you want to grow some peanuts but are unfamiliar with thier cultivation.

This book written at the end of WWI, attempted to inspire Victory Gardens so to speak as a profitable business for the poor who lived in the cities. By turning vacant city lots and small acreage in suburbs into profitable vegetable gardens. The book is somewhat outdated, but some of the principles are sound. I found the book interesting.

A small book about New Orleans in 1847 through the eyes of the author. He lists different sites around the town and gave brief descriptions and history of some of what he saw. Not an exhaustive profile of New Orleans by any means. I rate this book below average.

A very good book about the chess masters of the 19th century. Primarily focusing on the English players of the day but covering the rest of Europe as well. It shines a light on the various personalities of some of the masters which I found interesting. It did however spend a little too much time on the ancient history of chess and taking it back to ancient India to its supposed invention. This part was a little boring for me, but overall It was a very good book. I recommend it.

The story is a little longer than it need be. At times somewhat boring. In this story, Capt. Barton is dogged by his version of the Grimm Reaper.

Interesting story of a haunting from 1716-1717 in the UK. multiple witnesses. This is followed by several ghost stories from the 1700's.

An interesting perspective on the deeds of R. Ingle. This short book looks in to the historical documents from the early days of Maryland, to extract the truth behind the actions and accusations of R. Ingle and supports the idea that he was acting on a higher authority as this was the period in England when the Catholics were at odds with the Protestants, hence forth the reason so many Protestants came to the new world, including many of my own ancestors.
