Greg B.’s book reviews

In This little book, Doyle describes his favorite bookshelf and the books it contains. He gives his review and feelings about the books he has that mean the most to him. And when he enters his library and closes the door, he leaves the real world and enters a magical place where the world stops and anything is possible...on the library side of the door.

Good book. Full of action, and this us the same detective that was in the Ivory snuffbox. The Ivory Snuff box was made into a movie, however that was back in the silent film days. The author went on to have a busy career writing scripts for movies and shows. In this book the weakness of the French police is displayed by the use of the detectives wife to do the work of the french police. Why would you have to put a foreign woman in danger to do YOUR job? Any way...good book.

This us a little book written by a seed seller. He also was a farmer and tester of lots of different variates of plants. He mostly focuses on cabbages, it makes up about 95% of the book. In the book he lists many variates of cabbages and what growing conditions are best for them. He also briefly covered a little about cauliflowers, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and Kale. I found the book useful and informative. This book is from 1889.

Short but informative description of how Gen. Howe overlooked an easy maneuver early in the fall of 1776 that would have trapped the continental army in New York and may have ended the war for Independence with a British victory.

A short book based on a journal kept by a woman. She moved from London to the countryside with her family to see if they could survive living on a small 4 acre farm. She documents the trials and successes at different endeavors. She gives pointers on a few things learned. The work was long but they survived the six month test period they had set up for themselves. They stayed on after the six months were over. This book is from 1860. The book has a few typos or miss-spelled words, but they do not detract from the story.

I loved this little book, I wish more of the journal had survived. This journal gives you a taste of the life of the upper class in the early 1780's just as the new nation is being born. And is a glimpse like a time capsule into the lives of the two most prominent families in Virginia, the Washington's and the Lee's. Had this little worn, dilapidated and torn journal not been discovered in an old desk, this amazing view of the past would have been lost. Little treasures like this is why I dig through old books.

I found this book interesting and informative in the area of what the early peoples called werewolves. In those days it was a man dressed in the skin of a wolf or bear and was evil and sometimes cannibalistic. It also mention something that supports my theory of today where extreme evil deeds by mass murderers are the work of someone who is demonically possessed. It mentions hundreds of years ago the church had various theories as to the cause and diabolical possession was one. The book lists several stories from many areas and times to shed light on the subject.

I liked this book. It gives many accounts of Banshee haunting and difines what a Banshee is. It mentions that only the ancient Irish families have true Banshee hauntings

This is a very good book covering the exploits of a young chess genius in Europe. It details in this account in 1858-59 how Paul Morphy dominated all of the best chess champions in Europe to such a level it left everyone in a daze. He even played 8 talented opponents simultaneous while blind folded and won most of the games. Paul Morphy was from New Orleans, and if you are not familiar with his story, you should be.
