I really liked this story. It wasn't so much a horror as a type of dark fantasy/weird fiction/awe fiction. This book therefore isn't meant to frighten you only, but to inspire within you a sense of awe: of terror and of wonder at the same time. Blackwood ingeniously interweaves the two as you adopt the wife's or the husband's view point.

It's relatively short so give it a shot.

This is a fun book about an imaginary city (or cities really) that come to life in another dimension. It is also a story about a duo of children that must step into this dimension and save that world. The book itself is kind of reminiscent of Narnia's Voyage of the Dawn Treader and probably helped inspire C.S. Lewis in his Chronicles of Narnia.

I do agree with Ella: the part of the story about Mrs. Carew and her search for her long lost nephew is very touching indeed. The ending of this book however is a bit predictable and disappointing. I did like the first half but the second half came off as unnecessary OR as something that needed to be a third, separate novel. In the end tho, I still will recommend this book for everyone who enjoyed Pollyanna book #1 and is curious about her fate. :)

Really interesting short story. Short and quick, it makes you think about the dark side of this "utopian" society.

Pretty good story. It starts really slow but picks up near the end. If your kids like a magical adventure story, they will like this. And if you are just a big kid, you'd like it too.
