e end of her nose, while she counted "One, two, three" in a solemn voice. At once the cap changed to a slate, on which was written in big, white chalk marks:

"LET DOROTHY GO TO THE CITY OF EMERALDS"

The little old woman took the slate from her nose, and having read the words on it, asked, "Is your name Dorothy, my dear?"

"Yes," answered the child, looking up and drying her tears.

"Then you must go to the City of Emeralds. Perhaps Oz will help you."

"Where is this city?" asked Dorothy.

"It is exactly in the center of the country, and is ruled by Oz, the Great Wizard I told you of."

"Is he a good man?" inquired the girl anxiously.

"He is a good Wizard. Whether he is a man or not I cannot tell, for I have never seen him."

"How can I get there?" asked Dorothy.

"You must walk. It is a long journey, through a country that is sometimes pleasant and sometimes dark and terrible. However, I will use all the magic arts I know of to keep you from harm.

The Book's AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! I loved the book!!!!! Full of different features! Different places and different adventures!
I don't know how popular the movie The Wizard of Oz is today (2012), but it is definitely a classic and I see it on TV a lot, usually around Halloween. While the movie is great, it is only a shadow of what the book is.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was originally published in 1900. For that reason, I can understand how many might think it will not be interesting, what with all the Percy Jackson type stories out there now. In fact, I am ashamed to admit that I felt the same way when I decided to read it to my daughter.

What a pleasant surprise I had when I began to read the book. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz exceeded my expectations. This book is so incredibly good that I decided I want to read all the books in the series. It is exciting, imaginative and incredibly intelligent.

In addition, it is a wonderful book to read with children. It does not talk down to the reader, which I think is great. I had to explain things to my daughter and tell her what certain words meant, but that is a good thing, not bad. Besides the fact that it helps children remember a book, it aids in communication.

The only warning I have is that along with the not talking down to children, this book does not pull punches. So there are a couple of violent and gory scenes. Not Freddy Kruger gory...

Bottom line, this is one of the books that I consider a must read in your lifetime book.
i have wacthed the movie and it was wonderful and very exciting...i didn't know it's also in a book, so i think i might as well get myself a book!....it's been thirteen years now and i can't believe am now gonna get my favourite movie in a book!
While the movie was awesome, the book is better! It's a fun, easy read that will delight and charm you. Take the time to feel like a little kid encountering Oz for the first time again.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading the rest of the series.
i have known o'z from a japanese cartoon since i was 10 years old.stll now i can remember the scene i was watching o'z on tv.it's a good memory.thanks for giving me a chance to detail my old memory reading it.:)
So many more details in this book. And I was surprised at all the things the movie differed from the book. Many surprises and unexpected details since I had only seen the movie up until now. I would agree that if you have only seen the movie, you owe it to yourself to read the book and learn more about the scarecrow, tin man, and lion.

If all you know of Oz comes from the movie musical, you owe it to yourself to read the book that inspired Hollywood. You will learn a lot more about Dorothy and her friends than the movie reveals. This first volume in what was to become a collection of 40 officially recognized books is not even the best in the series, but start your jouney here.
