After returning from a thirty-year trade mission, the crew of the Ea wake from cryonic suspension to find that their home world, Bh'Haret, is dead. "Screamer" satellites have been strung around their planet warning of a plague. A scan of the surface of Bh'Haret reveals no trace of human life—only crumbling cities.Their fuel and other supplies nearly exhausted, the crew has little choice but to make planet fall on Bh'Haret, infected with a virulent and deadly disease. In a desperate scramble to save themselves, the crew members of the Ea must each, in his or her own way, come to terms with the death of their world—and try to rekindle a belief in the possibility of life.

led to be assumed in three local years (a Speaker was en route); now, however, Ohan has requested an indefinite stay. Though they have not stated so, I am convinced they are reluctant to sever trading ties with Bh'Haret (and the seven other non-affiliated worlds clustered in a 1.3 light year radius) as required by assumption into the Polyarchy. It is my belief that the administrators of Bh'Haret have convinced their counterparts on Ohan that the acquisition of technology will occur more rapidly through trade with non-affiliated worlds than through the Nexus Ascension program. If so, this constitutes a major setback. Had Ohan been assumed, Bh'Haret would have been further isolated. Instead, we now find ourselves facing an extremely delicate situation on Ohan. Other local non-affiliated worlds are waiting to see the outcome of Ohan's vacillation.

Because of the distances involved, I urge you to act expeditiously. The current Instrument installed on Bh'Haret is not a Speaker; her communications, therefore

A fairly interesting story that will keep your attention to the end. Unfortunately, the pacing is pretty slow - the author needs to work on this. Also, the sporadic use of extremely foul language, and the total lack of morality within the story are turn-offs. Also, it's never really clear who the main character is - we jump from head to head quite a bit without centering on any particular character.

An ancient galactic empire is threatened, with world as mere pawns, and entire civilizations put at risk. Our heroes must overcome incredible challenges to unravel the mystery of who's who, while attempting a desperate attempt to save their own lives.
The initial story line sounded promising. Returning from a 30 year space voyage, the crew finds their home planet destroyed by plague. But the snail's pace of the plot and unconvincing characters were too much for me to overcome. I found the book disappointing considering the high reviews - as always, decide for yourself.
Great story, although the "big twist" seemed to be a bit of an overreach for what was an otherwise fantastic story

I have to admit that I was disappointed in the fact that the author tried to conclude the story with -two- separate stories without a final tie in together. (Basically ignoring the early hero to try to make us care about a previously worthless (IMO) character.)

Any full circle between the endings would have possibly made it a 5 * story, but as is, it's definitely a 4* book.
As the others have said, you simply can't put this one down ! Great plot and suspense. keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way...
A great sci-fi tale - a well conceived plot, good character development, and well written.
You won't want to put this down until you are finished. Then, you will want to find Boyczuk's next novel...
brilliant book could not put it down. one of the best sci fi books to date. needs to be a film script.
