It could never be written today as some non-white characters are villainous (you can only have white badguys these days) but it is actually balanced.
the only problem is a very dumb twist at the end that feels tacked on and defeats the moral questions raised, but it can and should be ignored.
A professor is able to create life (and without the aid of lightning.
But, seclusion is necessary, since his first efforts are compatible to those of Victor Frankenstein.
An island is the best choice for such endeavors..
Managing a mob of misshapen monsters is not the professors only concern.
There are pirates, greedy comrades and not to mention his lovely daughter.
It is left to one monster, or is he man, to save all.
Reminiscent of the H. G. Wells 1986, 'The Island of Doctor Moreau',
but this professor starts from scratch, his wonders to create, instead of using animals.
