A big-game hunter from New York is shipwrecked on an isolated island in the Caribbean, and is hunted by a Russian aristocrat. The story is an inversion of the big-game hunting safaris in Africa and South America that were fashionable among wealthy Americans in the 1920s.

Book Excerpt

When I shot some of his prize turkeys with it, he did not punish me; he complimented me on my marksmanship. I killed my first bear in the Caucasus when I was ten. My whole life has been one prolonged hunt. I went into the army--it was expected of noblemen's sons--and for a time commanded a division of Cossack cavalry, but my real interest was always the hunt. I have hunted every kind of game in every land. It would be impossible for me to tell you how many animals I have killed."

The general puffed at his cigarette.

"After the debacle in Russia I left the country, for it was imprudent for an officer of the Czar to stay there. Many noble Russians lost everything. I, luckily, had invested heavily in American securities, so I shall never have to open a tearoom in Monte Carlo or drive a taxi in Paris. Naturally, I continued to hunt--grizzliest in your Rockies, crocodiles in the Ganges, rhinoceroses in East Africa. It was in Africa that the Cape buffalo hit me and laid me up for six months. Only because the public has become jaded by the fast action of modern, plot-less movies is this book not appreciated by some. Indeed, as someone commented earlier, it has inspired countless other stories and movies, which you probably think are wonderful! Just as the modern who-dunnit wouldn't exist without Poe's early work creating the detective series, this plot wouldn't exist without Connell's work a century or so ago!!

This book is the worst book I have ever read. I will NEVER EVER in my entire lifetime read this book again. Everybody that has read this is now stupider.
Stan, must you show your ignorance when you call a book "it's so Gay"? Check your hate at the door please.
This story has inspired countless other books and films. It's a quick exciting read that shows how much you can do with a short story, it could quite easily have been expanded into a novel. I highly recommend this story.

eh - It's not a bad story, but it's a bit predictable and the characters are pretty 'flat' - but overall it's probably a worthwhile read if you've never read it before.
What a nerve-jangling and breathless short story this is.

The concept of the hunted becoming the hunter is simple enough, but the execution here is sublime. This is one of those short stories that you read in thirty minutes but remember for a lifetime.
One of the neatest twist stories ever. Quite spooky - and you won't ever forget it. Read it... you'll have to come back and read it again later, b/c you won't be able to forget it.
