e, he had been an apt scholar. But these were minor things when compared with the danger of arrest that confronted him. Nor was the danger an imaginary one; for he knew that the police had doubtless arrested Hallis and Mattram, and that the cowardly fellows would not hesitate to make a clean breast of the affair. Moreover, he realized his utter inability to acquit himself of the charge of throwing the glass. Dan had shifted the act upon his cousin, and no evidence to the contrary could be hoped for.

When the clock struck two, Larry's resolve was fixed. He arose to his feet, and began to overhaul the clothes in the bureau drawers.

"Good-by to the old life." he said to himself. "I hope I'll make a better success of the new one.
