A Legacy of Peril
Book Excerpt
"That may all be, sir," replied Leslie, "but it cannot change or delay my purpose. And you must admit that I, at least, have strong claims to safety and protection. France aided our colonies to win freedom, and the relations between the two countries are of the best. No American need fear to be molested in Paris to-day. The search for my father's family may be difficult, even impossible, but I am confident of finding friends to aid me, and equally confident of finding protection from the perils of that turbulent city."
"But suppose that, having traced your father's people, you learn that they are aristocrats?" suggested Mordecai Janeway. "Suppose they are in prison, or have already perished by the guillotine? You, as one of their blood, might meet the same fate."
