It is a story to be read with a rush, for no one can put it down until he has found the heart of the mystery. For originality of detail and cleverness of development this book is really unusual. This is something more than a mere detective story; it is a thrilling romance--a romance of mystery and crime where a shrewd detective helps to solve the mystery.

He nodded, quietly showing me first the one, then the other; then with a sheepish air which he endeavored to carry of with a laugh, he cried:

A beautiful young bride is found shot to death in an old family house that has seen other mysterious deaths, including the death of a stranger during her wedding just a few weeks prior. Green isn't nearly as adept in this tale as she is in her better books. The style is clunky, the action drags and the characters aren't compelling.
This was terrific! It soon becomes clear that what at first seems so obvious is not obvious at all. It really keeps you turning the pages! I really like Anna Katherine Green. She can out plot Agatha Christie when she wants to do so. I am pleased that her works are available on Manybooks.
