"Here is a good story of a most atrocious murder -- with much interwoven love interest and the eventual triumph of strict justice... undeniably good reading! It is the sort of story that the average man will finish at one sitting, and the perusal of which could be interrupted only by some dire extremity. The conculsion and explanation is entirely unexpected." --New York Times Review of Books, 1907.

I quite agree with Webstar on his opinion about the ending. Although, the gradual unfolding of the mystery was brilliant and dynamic, at the end when the underlying mystery suddenly began to reveal, it turned out to be a dull and mediocre ending.
The plot was creative enough, but I wish the writing had been creative like the plot. The writing was too descriptive, as if I was reading a text book.
Lively,well-written and interesting - until the last few pages, when it becomes silly and rushed. It\'s one of those where you feel that the author suddenly realised he\'d written nearly the number of words required and scribbled down a quick ending.
