i. Joko nyt sanoma laivan hukkumisesta koski isääsi kipeämmin kuin hän itse tahtoi myöntää, vai pahentuiko hänen tautinsa muista syistä -- sen Jumala yksin tietää. Kauheasti vaan kiihtyi kova kuume, isäsi meni tainnoksiin, ja tuskin kului muutamia viikkoja laivan hukkumisesta, kun hän jo vaipui vaineesen.
"Leo, vaikea, suruisa, huolettava oli tämä aika minulle!
