upon the lawn, and, reclining in a long deck-chair, sipped his coffee and curaçao, his face turned to the crimson sundown showing across the dark edge of the forest. He was full of dark forebodings.

The end of his career--a scandalous career--was near. The truth was out!

As he lay back with his hot, fevered head upon the cushion of the long cane chair, his dead cigar between his nerveless fingers, a thousand bitter thoughts crowded upon him. He had striven to reform, he had tried hard to turn aside and lead an honest life, yet it seemed as though his good intentions had only brought upon him exposure and disaster.

He thought it all over. His had, indeed, been an amazing career of duplicity. What a sensation would be caused when the truth became revealed! Over the top. It starts out reasonably, as the story of a criminal's efforts to go straight because of his young daughter, but then becomes pretty bizarre, with a lot of unexplained business and sensationalism. Le Queux has done much better.
It is surprising that Le Queux has been forgotten when you look at the large body of work he left behind.

I've read several of his other books--all page turners--and this one is no exception. A lot of his writing (I suppose just a reflection of the time) is over the top, but you are very willing to overlook that because the scullduggery is moving at warp speed, and you can't wait to find out what is really going on. Enjoy!

I'm not clear why le Queux has been forgotten. This is the second of his novels I have read and have really enjoyed both.

This is a crime/mystery story which leaves loose ends everywhere, only tying them together at the last moment. All through the book, the reader is left wondering what is going on and why people are behaving so oddly. Add to this a romance, some international gem-thieves, disguises and murder and you have a gripping page-turner for those who like classic mysteries.
