like a windmill."

They took up the old archer, and carried him between them into his house, where he had dwelt alone. And there they laid him on the floor, out of regard for the mattress, and sought, as best they might, to straighten and compose his limbs.

Appleyard's house was clean and bare. There was a bed, with a blue cover, a cupboard, a great chest, a pair of joint-stools, a hinged table in the chimney corner, and hung upon the wall the old soldier's armoury of bows and defensive armour. Hatch began to look about him curiously.

"Nick had money," he said. "He may have had three score pounds put by. I would I could light upon't! When ye lose an old friend, Master Richard, the best consolation is to heir him. Stevenson has the ability to mix storytelling with description and make it not only bearable, but actually interesting. I felt like I was there to witness the story; close calls, ironies, and medieval english. The medieval english was well enough done that it added flavor and not obstacles to the story. I found this book exciting, the story adventurous, and enjoyed it. I think this is more than just a child's story, and seems reminiscient of Howard Pyle's "Robin Hood." If you're looking for a story as good as "Treasure Island," and like medieval times....You'll definitely like this classic Stevenson novel.
It is a piece of literature that is defined by older prose. The story is for children (to be read to or those with exceptional reading skills) and I enjoyed it a great deal, when a child. If you are looking for easy reading it is not the book for you. They style gets bogged down somewhat in old English wording.

I enjoyed this story and would read it again. There is a snippet of history in the tale, which may lead the reader to inquire about the war of the roses, and the Crook Back.

It is a familar story, a maiden hidden and prized. A young man taking a journey into manhood and his discovery of truth. The Black Arrow, who wields it and is killing the young man's friends?

So I guess if you think it isn't modern enough or not enough action then it would not be for you. Although, as I recall it had narrow escapes, battles, and milliary scenes. If you can suspend yourself and get enthralled by a simple tale, then by all means read. There is a part that lags, and that would be the ship sequence.
