The Young Buglers

Henty's historical novels center on coming of age stories for young men. As such they contain a slightly moralistic tone that was common for this period. The protagonists usually find themselves in an amazing sequence of circumstances that allow them to demonstrate their courage, loyalty, honesty, etc. This gives the story a very "dated" feel. Nonetheless, the stories are engaging and historically accurate. I have enjoyed several of them and this one is no exception.

Brilliant! Reads like a three-act play. Marvelous twists and turns with a superb ending that ties everything up nicely. Well worth your time.

An excellent read. Very entertaining. The plot is raw, the gangsters are disreputable and the author makes no attempt to put the reader at ease. Not for the faint of heart.

A masterpiece! A swahbuckling epic that carries you along. Sabatini's dialogue is absolutely wonderful. A must read.

I agree with Alan Loewen's review. The protagonist is a scumbag with an odd fascination on classical music and literature. Other than that, he has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. A slightly disturbing read. I enjoyed it.

Tom Clancy meets Die Hard. Terrorist thugs (their leader bears an uncanny resemblance to Ilich Ramirez Sanchez - AKA "The Jackal") threaten to nuke the U.S. Sixth Fleet in the Aegean unless the Prez coughs up a gazillion dollars.

If you like military thrillers you'll enjoy this.

First - regadless of the title this isn't really science fiction. It's more swords and sorcery- think Rings of Sauron rather than Rings of Saturn. Other than that it's sort of like junk food for the brain - not very nutritious, but it certainly tastes good going down.

Regardless of what the title says this isn't truly science fiction - it's actually swords and sorcery - more the Rings of Sauron than the Rings of Saturn. That said - it is an enjoyable piece of pulp fiction - junk food for the brain. Not really nutritious; but at least it tastes good going down.
