I agree with the above reviewers, this is a book to read early on in the series. After I read the first book, I wished it had been a bit longer and included more information about Tarzan's life when he was living with the apes, and this book made up for that as it is full of individual short stories about his adventures growing up!
I never read the book before -- I was very pleasantly surprised to find it was a very interesting and engaging read! Quite a bit different than most of the movie versions I have seen. I also never realized that at the end, Robin Crusoe mentions that he had further adventures after getting OFF the island in a sequel to this novel, that I'm now downloading! Highly recommend this classic novel!
This book is timeless. Very short, but well worth reading, especially during times when you need some encouragement. This book has gotten me through some of the toughest times in my life, even though it's over 100 years old!!
What a great find! I am so glad I discovered William Hope Hodgson's works here! I first read "Carnacki, the Ghost Finder" because it was highly recommended by other readers, and went on to read this book, the "Boats of the 'Glen-Carrig.'" I could not put it down! It reminds me of a cross between Pirates of the Caribbean and the Swiss Family Robinson - with LOTS of action and creepy monsters. The author does such a great job at describing the monsters and the landscapes and the people that it is easy to envision them. The ending is just wonderful, and I can't wait to read the rest of his works! This book would make a great movie!! I'm so glad Manybooks.net is making these old books available, I would have never read this book otherwise.
This is the second book in the Tarzan series. I had no idea these books were so good -- they bear little resemblance to any of the movies you have ever seen! Tarzan is always depicted as barely speaking English and living in the trees with "Jane" and "boy." In the books, he's an extremely intelligent man who learns to speak English (and many other languages) beautifully and fulfills his aristocratic destiny with grace and dignity. The books remind me of a cross between Raiders of the Lost Ark, Hidalgo, and The Mummy . . . they are action-packed and gripping -- the beautiful scenes and nasty villains are easily visualized due to Burrough's wonderful storytelling, and you won't be able to put them down!
All I can say is "WOW!" This book bears no resemblance to any of the movies I've ever seen -- it is REALLY good. It was so riveting I could not put it down! What a great story -- I highly recommend this book and can't wait to download the next one in the series!!
This is a wonderful book for adults & children! I read it many times as a child and just reread it at age 50, and I still love it just as much! I highly recommend this entertaining and instructional read for everyone!! This version has some notes which point out inconsisties and factual errors by the author, which are entertaining in themselves!
