I really liked this book a lot, but was terribly disappointed when it just ended suddenly, leaving the reader just hanging there wondering what the heck happened. Imagine my surprise when checking out books to download last night, I discovered that the book was continued and completed by Jules Verne!! The continuation is called "An Antartic Mystery" by Jules Verne. I'm on the last chapter right now and he's getting ready to disclose what happened to Gordon Pym! Gotta go finish the book now!

I can't believe this was written in 1893 -- it's as fresh and relevant as if were written yesterday -- if you are hurting and your life is full of problems due to the present economic situation in this country, read this sermon! I guess the answer has been around a long time -- and it's one we need to learn over and over again . . .

I read Myrtle Reed's book "Old Rose & Silver" and liked it so much that I downloaded this one, and I liked it even better! Myrtle Reed is a very good writer and this book grabs you right from the first paragraph and doesn't let you go! I could give a better description of the book, but I won't because it would have too many spoilers, but this is a must-read and I highly recommend it.

I can't believe I'm 51 years old and never read this Christmas classic before now!! It is so much better than any of the many movie versions that I have seen!! A wonderful wonderful story, timeless, and beautiful, and haunting. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

I loved, loved, loved this book!! It makes me want to go to Provincetown and see if any of the landmarks she mentions with such love are still there! Hope I can find the sequel somewhere!!

I completely agree with the first reviewer below! This is a charming book, reminiscent of the writing of Jane Austen, but more sweet and sentimental. I couldn't put it down and it kept me up late several nights! Here's a small example of the vividness of her writing:

"Crimson and golden leaves rained from the maples, and the purple winds of Autumn swept them into drifts at the roadside. Amethystine haze shimmered in the valleys and lay, cloud-like, upon the distant hills. "

A rare gem! I really loved this book -- couldn't put it down. I think it would make a great movie!!

This is a very interesting book. This is a series of interviews of former slaves living in Oklahoma in the late 1930's. Most of them were in their 80's or 90's and were children during the Civil War, but many of them had vivid memories of slavery and also recalled the stories that had been handed down to them from their parents and grandparents. Although the stories are fascinating, most of them tend to downplay the harsh reality of slavery somewhat. I think this may be due to the fact that the narratives were collected in the 1930's, when the Ku Klux Klan was still quite active in the south, which may have helped to inhibit some of the interviewees from revealing everything they knew or felt. But as long as you read these narratives with that in mind, they are quite fascinating and cover many many aspects of life for slaves before, during, and after the Civil War, and I think it's wonderful that someone had the presence of mind to collect these wonderful historical accounts of the people who were actually involved.

I'm so happy to see "Beautiful Joe" offered here! It was my favorite book when I was a child, and several years ago I bought a new copy on eBay. A wonderful book for children and one of my favorites of all time!!

My favorite book of the Tarzan series so far! The tale just grabs you and won't let you go, and I LOVED the ending so much -- this book is just wonderful, as they all have been! It's really hard to believe it was written in 1914. I don't think most people know how different these books are from the Tarzan image we all have from movies and television, I know I didn't! I was also very happy to discover recently that one of my favorite directors, Guillermo del Toro, is reading the series, too, and hoping to make a movie based on the first book in the series that will remain true to the prose of Edgar Rice Burroughs!
