"He wouldn't go out in his pyjamas! But did no one see him go out?"

"Yes," observed Shelmore, rising from his chair, "that's it!--did no one see him go out? Because he must have gone out between last thing at night and first thing next morning. But there's only one thing to do. Belling--we shall have to consult the police. I see your telephone's in the corner. You don't mind if I ring up the City Hall? Not one of Fletcher's better efforts.

1) The motive for the crime is extremely unlikely. 2) The "flash of insight" that reveals the criminal requires deduction that would challenge Sherlock Holmes on his best day. 3) Some critical loose ends are left unresolved. "My own reasons" and "Never mind why" do not enlighten the reader - and would certainly not satisfy the police.

It is a decent story but at the end of a good mystery there should be a sense of completeness and resolution - not so here.
Seriously! This book was so pathetic! I am going to blow the plot so don't read any further. Throughout the whole book you are investigating the murder of James Deane. Then 75% of the way there the author makes the murdered man actually a cousin with the same name! How contrived is that!! It was so fake and contrived!

Situated in a small English town, this mystery goes smooth and with changing perspectives, accelerating and culminating as you like it most. Perhaps not all threads of the story are clear at the end but they can be readily filled in. Will try more from this author.
