Mr. Leigh Mitchell Hodges, The Optimist, in an editorial for the Philadelphia North American, says: "And when, after Pollyanna has gone away, you get her letter saying she is going to take 'eight steps' to-morrow--well, I don't know just what you may do, but I know of one person who buried his face in his hands and shook with the gladdest sort of sadness and got down on his knees and thanked the Giver of all gladness for Pollyanna."

bring her up among her own people in the East. Hence I am writing to you.

"The little girl will be all ready to start by the time you get this letter; and if you can take her, we would appreciate it very much if you would write that she might come at once, as there is a man and his wife here who are going East very soon, and they would take her with them to Boston, and put her on the Beldingsville train. Of course you would be notified what day and train to expect Pollyanna on. Pollyanna

"Hoping to hear favorably from you soon, I remain, "Respectfully yours, "Jeremiah O. White."

With a frown Miss Polly folded the letter and tucked it into its envelope. She had answered it the day before, and she had said she would take the child, of course. She HOPED she knew her duty well enough for that!--disagreeable as the task would be.

As she sat now, with the letter in her hands, her thoughts went back to her sister, Jennie, who had been this child's mother, and to the time when Jennie, as

When I began reading this book I was convinced that the saccharine Pollyanna would wear me down. She didn't. I ended up thoroughly enjoying this book and am quite surprised that this being an American classic, yet so little people have read it? I'd expect more reviews and more downloads! The bottom line is, if you want to instil in your kids the importance of a positive attitude, read them this book! Also: there's a sequel on manybooks.net called "Pollyanna grows up". I will be checking out this book soon as well :)
I agree with Carl, this book shouldn't be made fun of. It's infectious, I started playing the glad game after I read it. It's all about having a good attitude and seeing the glass half full. What's wrong with that??
This book is very inspirational. People may make a lot of jokes about this book but I wont. Pollyanna's "glad" game was a way to cope with depression and she went through a lot. It still has a message for us even today.
One of the plucky orphan books so popular in the early 20th century, thos book has much in common with Anne of Green Gables, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm and their ilk. Pollyanna is an orphan sent to live with her curmudgeonly aunt, and eventually she wins over her aunt and the whole town through her glad game, where she finds something to be glad about in everything. The book is a bit TOO cheerful sometimes, and the ending is a bit contrived. But it is a fun read and one of the better stories of this type.
