At an isolated country house on the Welsh border a scholarly professor and his spinster sister keep a residence for Lady Warren, a bedridden and evil-tempered woman. Several other residents are at home when news of a recent murder leaves them all no recourse but to lock themselves in for night... just as someone begins to knock loudly at the front door.

the residential quarter of a prosperous town. It should have been surrounded by an acre of well-kept garden, and situated in a private road, with lamp-posts and a pillar-box.
For all that, it offered a solidly resistant front to the solitude. Its state of excellent repair was evidence that no money was spared to keep it weather-proof. There was no blistered paint, no defective guttering. The whole was somehow suggestive of a house which, at a pinch, could be rendered secure as an armored car.
It glowed with electric-light, for Oates' principal duty was to work the generating plant. A single wire overhead was also a comfortable reassurance of its link with civilization.
Helen no longer felt any wish to linger outside. The evening mists were rising so that the evergreen shrubs, which clumped the lawn, appeared to quiver into life. Viewed through a veil of vapor, they looked black and grim, like mourners assisting at a funeral.

A very enjoyable well-written mystery with a likable heroine and an unexpected ending.

What a fun read! The story kept me guessing and I loved the ending. Some Must Watch read like an old black and white film. Make some tea, turn down the lights and enjoy!

Good heavens! This was really something. Yes, I read it at night (it is the only time I have to read). It is truly creepy and totally riveting. I simply couldn't put it down. Don't miss it. I have to find out if Ethel White wrote more books. This one was something very special. Enjoy!

Young girls are being murdered. (Don't worry, no explicit descriptions). But who is the murderer: an unknown stranger or a familiar face?
The desolate country house, the undercurrents of tension, the storm outside...all make it a gripping read. The tension almost becomes unbearable in the end as the murderer nears the prey. I read it in one sitting. You simply cannot put it down. A note of caution though: Don't read it while you are all alone in your house!
