The novel is the coming-of-age story of John Clayton, born in the western coastal jungles of equatorial Africa to a marooned couple from England, John and Alice Clayton, Lord and Lady Greystoke. Adopted as an infant by the she-ape Kala after his parents are killed by the savage king ape Kerchak, Clayton is renamed Tarzan (''White Skin'' in the ape language) and raised in ignorance of his human heritage.

This book is awesome! I didn't care for the ending but that will be addressed in the next few books I'm sure.
If you only read one Tarzan book, read this one. Oh, and number 6 as well!!!
All I can say is "WOW!" This book bears no resemblance to any of the movies I've ever seen -- it is REALLY good. It was so riveting I could not put it down! What a great story -- I highly recommend this book and can't wait to download the next one in the series!!
